TWO SETS: The script called for two apartments separated by an urban divide. An interior loft where a young couple, newly arrived in the city, would be lured to observe a second couple, successful and established, in a studio apartment across the way. They needed to be close, but not too close. The production strategy relied on a practical connection between these sets, where action could play out in both simultaneously while captured in one camera. This required an extensive stage build.
THE LOCATION: A location was selected in Montreal with two buildings separated by an interior courtyard - two buildings of contrasting styles that fit the concept for the two interior sets - an old industrial loft building converted into apartments, and a contemporary studio apartment building. This location would not only serve as the exterior filming location, but directly inform the stage build.
THE BUILD: On the largest sound stage in Montreal, the two apartments were built in full, roughly 2000sf each, separated by about 50 feet. The actual dimensions of the location were compressed slightly, while the details remained precise. The sets were elevated a half-level off the stage floor, with their exterior facades rising 2-1/2 levels. A wall of exterior facade with a fire escape capped one end, while a custom day/night backing of the Montreal skyline on an adjustable coved track was manufactured for the fourth wall. An additional building rooftop was added to hide the bottom of the backing.

SET DESIGN: On the opposite side of the stage, Sebastian and Julia’s apartment - a combined photography studio and living space. A contemporary apartment building with a curtain wall of aluminum and glass. Cool yet punchy in its color scheme and stylish in its decor. The apartment of an established and successful young couple living at the height of urban luxury.
